Show Notes

Dan Holiday, a mystery novelist who advertises for adventure, receives a letter from Mrs. Sheila Corbett, pleading for help. Her father, John Corbett, has disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and she fears something terrible has happened.

As Holiday investigates, he learns that John Corbett was presumed dead years ago—but now, there are whispers that he has been seen alive. The deeper Holiday digs, the more he realizes that Corbett’s past is tangled in a web of deception, hidden identities, and a secret that someone is desperate to keep buried.

Holiday follows a trail of clues leading to a pawn shop, where he is ambushed and knocked unconscious. When he wakes, the shop is empty, and the evidence he found has vanished. With the help of Lieutenant Kling, Holiday pieces together the truth: Corbett was involved in a counterfeit money operation, and his former associates are trying to silence him before he can expose them.

In a tense final confrontation, Holiday and the police uncover the counterfeit plates hidden in an old house in Brennan Square, leading to the arrest of the criminals. Corbett, now free from his past, reunites with his daughter.

This episode is a gripping blend of suspense, deception, and action—hallmarks of Box 13's storytelling.

[00:00:06] Speaker A: Box 13 with the Star of Paramount Pictures, Alan Ladd as dan holiday. [00:00:18] Speaker B: Box 13, care of Star Times. I saw your ad in the paper and I wondered if you'd help me. I can't go to the police and I have no money for a private detective. But my father is in trouble, I'm sure. And when you find out who he is, you'll know why I can't go to the police and why I must have him. [00:00:40] Speaker C: I know who he is. You know why I can't go to the police and why I must have help. Mrs. Sheila Corbett, 356 Waring Avenue. It didn't sound like much, this letter, but I did find out who her father was. I found him dead, then learned he was alive. Sure, it sounds impossible, but that was it. [00:01:27] Speaker A: And now back to the dead man walks another Box 13 adventure with Alan Ladd as Dan Holliday. [00:01:38] Speaker D: I wonder why she can't go to the police, Susie. [00:01:41] Speaker C: If I knew that, I wouldn't have to go to see Mrs. Corbyn. [00:01:44] Speaker D: Gee, Mr. Holliday, it sure sounds like a wild goose chase. He'll probably turn out to be a dub. Oh, is that the word I wanted, Susie. [00:01:53] Speaker C: Only you can give the answer to that question. [00:01:55] Speaker D: Well, once in a while I get a word right. Well, don't I? [00:01:59] Speaker C: Oh, sure, sure. That's what makes it so interesting when you do get one right. I don't know what you're talking about. [00:02:05] Speaker D: Kind of makes it the slice of life, huh? [00:02:07] Speaker C: Two strikes and before you. Foul tip the next one I'm leaving for. What was that address? [00:02:12] Speaker D: Oh, 356 Waring Avenue. [00:02:15] Speaker C: 356 Waring Avenue. So long, Susie. It wasn't a very nice neighborhood. 356 Waring Avenue. But the flat I entered was neat, clean scrubbed and polished. And the woman who asked me to sit down was as neat and clean as the room. I waited for her to start the. And she did. [00:02:40] Speaker B: I'm Mrs. Sheila Corbett. [00:02:41] Speaker C: Yes, I guessed that. And I'm box 13. My name's Dan Holliday. [00:02:46] Speaker B: Well, I. I don't know how to start, Mr. Holliday. [00:02:50] Speaker C: The beginning's always a good place, Mrs. Corbett. Saves time and trouble. [00:02:53] Speaker B: I want you to find my father. [00:02:55] Speaker C: You said you couldn't go to the police about it. Why not? [00:02:59] Speaker B: Because. Because my father is her old convict. Do you understand? [00:03:06] Speaker C: Are you afraid he's done something? [00:03:08] Speaker B: No, I know that's not true. He. He swore he'd go straight when he. [00:03:12] Speaker C: Came home but you think he hasn't. [00:03:14] Speaker B: I didn't say that. [00:03:15] Speaker C: But the fact that you're afraid to go to the police says so. Look, Mrs. Corbett, if he's done nothing wrong, there's nothing to be afraid of. [00:03:22] Speaker B: Yes, I know, but there'd be questions. I have two children, Mr. Holliday. A husband who's wonderful to me. No one in this neighborhood knows about my father, so. [00:03:36] Speaker C: Well, all right, Mrs. Corbett, I'll give it a whirl. But first, when did you last see your father? [00:03:43] Speaker B: The day after he was released on parole. He came here. [00:03:46] Speaker C: Was he all right? [00:03:48] Speaker B: I don't know. [00:03:49] Speaker C: You don't know? [00:03:50] Speaker B: Well, I'll tell you what happened. He come home. He was here maybe two hours when the phone rang. [00:03:59] Speaker E: Sheila. Sheila, telephone. [00:04:02] Speaker B: Answer it, will you Dan? [00:04:03] Speaker C: All right. [00:04:05] Speaker E: Hello? Oh yeah, it's me. Why'd you call up? Look, I said nothing doing. [00:04:13] Speaker F: I meant it. [00:04:14] Speaker E: I'm straight now. Nothing doing. You won't get them and I won't say where they are. Lemme alone, will you? Just leave me alone. [00:04:22] Speaker B: Dad. Dad. Who was it? [00:04:25] Speaker E: Just a man I used to know. [00:04:26] Speaker B: Who? [00:04:27] Speaker E: Nobody you know, honey. [00:04:29] Speaker B: Well what did he want? [00:04:30] Speaker E: Nothing. [00:04:31] Speaker B: You were afraid. Why? Why were you afraid? [00:04:36] Speaker E: It wasn't anything, Sheila. [00:04:38] Speaker B: Dad, if there's something wrong. [00:04:40] Speaker E: There ain't. [00:04:41] Speaker B: You're on parole. [00:04:42] Speaker E: I know it. Don't you think I know it? [00:04:44] Speaker B: I'm sorry. [00:04:46] Speaker E: No, that's all right. But Sheila. [00:04:50] Speaker B: What? Dad. [00:04:50] Speaker E: Yeah? I want you to keep this for me. [00:04:54] Speaker B: What is it? [00:04:55] Speaker E: Just a piece of paper with something on it. Put it in a safe place. Keep it for me. [00:05:01] Speaker B: Keep it for you, dad? Why do you say that? [00:05:05] Speaker E: There's nothing to worry about, Sheila. Nothing at all. Now just forget all about it and don't worry because there ain't anything to worry about. [00:05:13] Speaker B: He said there wasn't anything to worry about, Mr. Holliday, but I was worried. He didn't come home that night or the next day. [00:05:23] Speaker C: And you don't know where he went? [00:05:24] Speaker B: No. [00:05:24] Speaker C: May I see the piece of paper he gave you? [00:05:26] Speaker B: Yes, here it is. [00:05:29] Speaker C: Is this all? [00:05:30] Speaker B: That's all. [00:05:31] Speaker C: 517 Slack St. S. Thomas, 945. Does this mean anything to you? [00:05:38] Speaker B: No. [00:05:39] Speaker C: Do you know the address? 517 Slack Street. [00:05:41] Speaker B: Not at all. [00:05:42] Speaker C: And the name? S. Thomas. [00:05:44] Speaker B: I never heard it before. [00:05:46] Speaker C: Do you mind if I take this? [00:05:47] Speaker B: No, of course not. Do you think you know what it means? [00:05:52] Speaker C: No more than you do, but I'll try to find out. [00:05:55] Speaker B: How? [00:05:55] Speaker C: By going to 517 Slack street and seeing if there's a Mr. S. Thomas there. The piece of paper with A message on it seemed like it might be a reminder to meet Mr. S. Thomas at 9:45 at this address. But when? What day? Why was S. Thomas, the man who called Mrs. Corbett's father, on the phone? You know, a guy can ask himself a lot of questions and get no answers. So I drove to 517 Slack Street. It was a pawn shop with everything from gold toothpicks to elephant heads. And clocks, lots of clocks that ticked off little punctuation marks into the silence. Hello? Hello? Anybody here? Holy mackerel. Holy mackerel. Hey, what's up? [00:07:09] Speaker G: Hey, you. Hey, you. Come on, wake up. Hey, Maguire, look, this guy's out like high button shoes. You wake up. Come on. That's the boy. Come on, sit up. [00:07:23] Speaker C: Sit up. Without my head? [00:07:25] Speaker G: Look, fella, parking on the side of the road isn't allowed. [00:07:28] Speaker C: Who are you? [00:07:29] Speaker G: State trooper. Who are you? [00:07:31] Speaker C: I. Hello. I'm Dan Holliday. [00:07:33] Speaker G: Welcome to Hamilton County. [00:07:35] Speaker C: Hamilton. What did you say? [00:07:37] Speaker G: Look, are you drunk? [00:07:38] Speaker C: Did you say Hamilton County? [00:07:40] Speaker G: That's it. We saw your car. Looked like there wasn't anybody in it. [00:07:44] Speaker C: Stopped to take a look and found me. [00:07:47] Speaker G: You're no Easter egg, but, brother, all that lump on your head needs is a shell. [00:07:51] Speaker C: How far is it to the city? [00:07:53] Speaker G: About 70 miles. [00:07:56] Speaker C: Thanks. I'll be going now. [00:07:57] Speaker G: Oh, no. Maybe you better come with us. [00:07:58] Speaker C: I. All right. Get in touch with Lieutenant Kling. I'll identify myself and tell him a nice story. He won't believe it, but I've got a lump on my head to back me up. [00:08:15] Speaker F: All right, then. All right. That's happened from the beginning. [00:08:18] Speaker C: You don't believe me, do you? [00:08:20] Speaker F: He saw a dead man on that pawn shop. [00:08:21] Speaker C: Then somebody teed off on me for a hole in one. When I woke up, I was out in the country, out in the next county. [00:08:27] Speaker F: In your own car? [00:08:28] Speaker C: In my own car. [00:08:30] Speaker F: What time did you go to the pawn shop? [00:08:32] Speaker C: It was 2:15. [00:08:34] Speaker F: It's five now. That's better than three hours. And no dead bodies have been reported. I keep in touch with them. [00:08:40] Speaker C: I tell you, I saw one. [00:08:42] Speaker F: Whose? [00:08:43] Speaker C: I didn't ask. [00:08:44] Speaker F: What did he look like? [00:08:45] Speaker C: Medium height, gray hair, blue suit. [00:08:48] Speaker F: Go on. [00:08:48] Speaker C: That's about all I can tell you. [00:08:50] Speaker F: Gray. Nothing else? [00:08:52] Speaker C: I didn't get to count his teeth because a roof fell in. Look, I've got a knot on my head. Doesn't that prove anything? [00:08:58] Speaker F: I guess it does. But you're sure you didn't recognize the man you saw lying dead? [00:09:03] Speaker C: No, I never saw him before. [00:09:05] Speaker F: And you went there Looking for? [00:09:07] Speaker C: I'll be dog gone. [00:09:09] Speaker F: What's the matter? [00:09:10] Speaker C: I didn't ask her his name. [00:09:14] Speaker F: Her who? [00:09:15] Speaker C: Mrs. Sheila Carbet. [00:09:16] Speaker F: What? [00:09:17] Speaker C: Does that flint strike a spark in your iron head? [00:09:20] Speaker F: You ever hear of a man named Winslow? Albert Winslow? [00:09:23] Speaker C: No. [00:09:24] Speaker F: Ex convict. Parole sent up for counterfeiting. [00:09:26] Speaker C: That might be. We got a picture of him. [00:09:28] Speaker F: Yeah. Wait a minute. Sergeant. File an Albert Winslow. Bring it in. [00:09:32] Speaker C: Albert Winslow has a daughter named Mrs. Sheila Corbett, is that it? [00:09:36] Speaker F: What deduction. By the way, Winslow answers the description of your dead man. Roughly. [00:09:42] Speaker C: Then let's get going. [00:09:43] Speaker F: Hold your horses. Bring it here, Sergeant. Yes, sir. Nice. [00:09:48] Speaker C: Let's see it. [00:09:49] Speaker F: There you are. That's all, Sergeant. [00:09:51] Speaker E: Okay. [00:09:54] Speaker C: Kling, Look. This is Albert Winslow. And Albert Winslow is the man I saw dead in that pawn shop. [00:10:00] Speaker F: You're sure? [00:10:00] Speaker C: Look, could I make this up? [00:10:02] Speaker F: I guess not. Okay, Dan, let's go to your pawn shop, see what we can redeem. This is it. [00:10:17] Speaker C: 517 Slack Street. [00:10:19] Speaker F: Go on. This the same place? [00:10:28] Speaker C: Sure it is. [00:10:29] Speaker H: Yes, sir. Can I do something for you? [00:10:31] Speaker F: Maybe. This your shop? [00:10:33] Speaker H: Oh yes. [00:10:34] Speaker F: Uh huh. [00:10:35] Speaker C: Were you in here at 2:15 this afternoon? [00:10:37] Speaker H: 2:15? Well yes, yes, one. [00:10:40] Speaker C: Yes, sure. [00:10:41] Speaker H: Well, of course. [00:10:42] Speaker C: How long have you been here? [00:10:43] Speaker H: Why about 15 years. [00:10:45] Speaker C: I mean today. [00:10:46] Speaker F: Holiday. Would you like my badge? [00:10:49] Speaker H: Badge? [00:10:50] Speaker F: Yeah. Police. Homicide. [00:10:52] Speaker H: Oh my goodness. [00:10:53] Speaker F: Yeah. What's the matter? [00:10:55] Speaker C: Dan, you'll take a look behind this counter, huh? [00:10:58] Speaker F: Well, I'm looking. What am I supposed to see? [00:11:00] Speaker C: Albert Winslow. Dead. [00:11:03] Speaker F: Where? [00:11:04] Speaker C: Look, Winslow is behind this counter at 2:15 this afternoon. [00:11:07] Speaker H: Excuse me, but I. I don't understand this. [00:11:09] Speaker C: Neither do I. [00:11:10] Speaker F: What's your name? [00:11:11] Speaker C: Holliday. [00:11:12] Speaker F: Shut up. Yours? [00:11:13] Speaker H: Barlow. Michael Barlow. [00:11:15] Speaker F: Do you know a man named Albert Winslow? [00:11:18] Speaker H: I never heard of him. No, I. I'm sure I didn't. [00:11:21] Speaker F: Mind if we look over your place? [00:11:22] Speaker H: Oh, certainly not. But I still don't understand. [00:11:25] Speaker C: I'll draw it for you. Mr. Barlow. At 2:15 this afternoon I walked into this shop. [00:11:30] Speaker H: This one? [00:11:31] Speaker C: This one. There was no one here except a dead man behind the counter. Then I was slugged in here. That's right. [00:11:37] Speaker H: But that's impossible. Well, I mean, I've been here all day. [00:11:42] Speaker F: Come on, we'll take a look around. [00:11:43] Speaker C: Wait a minute, Kling. [00:11:44] Speaker F: What now? [00:11:45] Speaker C: This place looks a little different from what it did earlier. It looks as though it's been changed around. [00:11:50] Speaker H: That's impossible too. [00:11:52] Speaker F: Dan, are you sure this is the place? [00:11:54] Speaker C: Of course I am. [00:11:55] Speaker F: Okay, we'll give it a fine toothed comb job. [00:11:58] Speaker H: Certainly. Help yourselves. Be only too glad to do anything I can. Although this is certainly very peculiar. [00:12:03] Speaker C: Thus we have the understatement of the week. [00:12:05] Speaker F: Well, let's get. [00:12:07] Speaker H: That's my phone. May I answer it? [00:12:10] Speaker F: Yeah, go ahead. [00:12:11] Speaker H: Thank you. That won't be a minute. [00:12:13] Speaker I: Hello? [00:12:15] Speaker C: Who? [00:12:16] Speaker H: Oh. Oh, yes. Yes, just a minute. Lieutenant Kling? [00:12:19] Speaker F: Yeah. [00:12:20] Speaker H: It's for you. [00:12:21] Speaker F: Thanks. Be right with you. Hello? Yeah, go ahead, Sergeant. What? Say that again. Okay. Thank you. We won't have to go over your place, Barlow. [00:12:34] Speaker H: You won't? [00:12:35] Speaker C: What are you talking about? Clink Holiday. [00:12:37] Speaker F: There's a Sergeant Garvin. He's very efficient. [00:12:40] Speaker C: So what's that got to do with this? [00:12:42] Speaker F: Lots. I left word where I could be reached. He reached me. [00:12:45] Speaker C: What are you building up to? [00:12:46] Speaker F: I don't know, but it's not good for you. [00:12:48] Speaker C: Yeah. What's on your mind? [00:12:49] Speaker F: More to the point, what's on yours? [00:12:51] Speaker C: Now look, I don't get this. What was that call about? [00:12:53] Speaker F: About Albert Winslow. [00:12:55] Speaker C: Go on. [00:12:56] Speaker F: You saw him dead at 2:15. [00:12:57] Speaker C: I said I did. [00:12:58] Speaker F: You want to change his story? [00:13:00] Speaker C: Now look, why should I? [00:13:01] Speaker F: Because Albert Winslow reported to his parole officer no later and no earlier than 4:20 this afternoon. [00:13:31] Speaker A: And now back to box 13 and Dan Holliday's latest adventure, the Dead Man Walks. [00:13:42] Speaker C: Yeah, that was it. The man I saw dead at 215 was alive again at 4:20. That's impossible. Kling said it was. And better than Kling. My own common sense said it was. So later that night, I went back to see Mrs. Corbett. [00:13:56] Speaker B: But you went to the police. You promised you wouldn't. [00:13:59] Speaker C: I'm sorry, but I had to. I saw your father dead. [00:14:04] Speaker B: Dead, you said. [00:14:05] Speaker C: I know that's a brutal way to put it, Mrs. Corbett, but the only way. [00:14:09] Speaker B: And the police. [00:14:10] Speaker C: There's nothing they can do or want to do. You're. Your father reported to his parole officer. He has to do that once a month. [00:14:17] Speaker B: Please, please find him. [00:14:20] Speaker C: I think I did find him. [00:14:22] Speaker E: Oh, no. [00:14:23] Speaker C: No, it can't be. Mrs. Corbett, I've got to ask some questions. You've got to answer them. [00:14:30] Speaker B: I'll try. [00:14:32] Speaker C: Good. Now look, your father talked to someone on the phone. He didn't mention any names? No, not even the name. Thomas. [00:14:39] Speaker B: I'm sure of it. [00:14:41] Speaker C: One dead end after another. Do you know the names of any of your father's RO. [00:14:47] Speaker B: Accomplices? [00:14:48] Speaker C: Yes. [00:14:49] Speaker B: I don't remember any names. But I can tell you the place where they used to meet. Where he was arrested. [00:14:57] Speaker C: Where was it? [00:14:58] Speaker B: A house in Brennan Square. 618, I think. [00:15:02] Speaker C: Now, you said your father Spoke to someone on the phone and said he wouldn't. Well, wouldn't give them something, but I. [00:15:07] Speaker B: Don'T know what he was talking about. [00:15:09] Speaker C: You haven't heard from him at all? [00:15:10] Speaker B: No. [00:15:11] Speaker C: You're sure you'd get in touch with him? [00:15:12] Speaker B: Oh, I know it. [00:15:13] Speaker C: Okay, Mrs. Corbett, I'll try the lead you gave me. 618 Brennan Square. 618 Brennan Square was an old frame house that looked as though its last tenants had moved out to go to George Washington's inaugural. Its windows were boarded up and the rusty iron fence in front bowed politely to the houses across the street. I walked up the stairs, knocked on the front door, never expecting an answer. I was about to turn away and chalk this off to exercise when. [00:15:51] Speaker G: Yeah? What do you want? [00:15:52] Speaker C: I'm looking for someone. [00:15:54] Speaker G: Ain't nobody here. [00:15:55] Speaker C: Mr. S. Thomas, perhaps? [00:15:57] Speaker G: Nobody. Now beat it. [00:15:58] Speaker C: Just a minute. Maybe you've got an Albert Winslow living here. [00:16:02] Speaker G: What was that name again? [00:16:04] Speaker C: Albert Winslow. As in Homer. [00:16:06] Speaker G: I don't get it. [00:16:07] Speaker C: You wouldn't. But do you know anyone by that name? [00:16:11] Speaker G: Maybe. You better come in. [00:16:13] Speaker C: Maybe I should. [00:16:16] Speaker G: Come on. [00:16:18] Speaker C: Do you live here? [00:16:20] Speaker G: Caretaker. [00:16:21] Speaker C: That's all I see. [00:16:24] Speaker G: What you stopping for? [00:16:26] Speaker C: I don't like haunted houses. This looks like one. [00:16:30] Speaker G: You're nuts. [00:16:31] Speaker C: Look, before we go any farther, maybe you'd like to tell me why you let me in when I mentioned the name of Albert Winslow. [00:16:36] Speaker G: Maybe he was a friend of mine. [00:16:39] Speaker C: I think I'd like a breath of fresh air. [00:16:41] Speaker G: Maybe you'll be lucky to get any breath at all, chum. [00:16:44] Speaker C: Oh, it's that way, huh? [00:16:46] Speaker G: This way. [00:16:47] Speaker C: What's the idea? [00:16:49] Speaker G: It was yours, chum. Now come on, get in front of me. Come on. Company Eddie. Looking for Al. [00:17:00] Speaker I: Getting crowded in here. Coming. I seen you before. Something. Oh, yeah. You came in Barlow's shop this afternoon. You didn't stay long, did you? [00:17:12] Speaker C: I took a sleeping tablet over the head. And you prescribed it, huh? [00:17:15] Speaker I: Yeah. I thought maybe you were just a guy, but now you come nudging in here. Charlie. [00:17:20] Speaker G: Hi. [00:17:21] Speaker I: Yes. For Al, huh? [00:17:22] Speaker G: That's right. [00:17:23] Speaker I: Sit down, Charlie. See if Barlow's come, too. [00:17:27] Speaker G: Okay. [00:17:27] Speaker C: Barlow, the pawn shop owner? [00:17:29] Speaker I: That's right. We couldn't get anything out of him, so we'll try you. [00:17:33] Speaker C: What do you mean? [00:17:34] Speaker I: Guess. [00:17:35] Speaker E: Take a look at Barlow. [00:17:38] Speaker C: You gave him plenty to remember you by, didn't you? [00:17:40] Speaker I: Uh huh. Now you keep looking at him and keep thinking how you'll look if you don't talk. [00:17:45] Speaker C: About what? [00:17:47] Speaker I: That's a starter, not talk. [00:17:49] Speaker C: Sure. I still say about what I'll give. [00:17:51] Speaker I: You five minutes to tell us where the plates are. [00:17:54] Speaker C: Plates? [00:17:56] Speaker I: Yeah, plates. [00:17:57] Speaker C: Oh. [00:18:00] Speaker H: I don't know. [00:18:01] Speaker I: Barlow's stubborn. You gonna be that way too? [00:18:04] Speaker C: Come on, let him alone. [00:18:05] Speaker I: Sure, but him and Winslow were pals. Winslow. Tell him. Maybe you know too. [00:18:09] Speaker C: Look, I'm trying to find Winslow, that's all. [00:18:12] Speaker I: That's so. Huh? [00:18:14] Speaker C: Why, you. [00:18:14] Speaker I: Sit still and take it. Now, come on. Where are the plates? What did Winslow do with them? He hit them before he took the rat. And we want him. [00:18:20] Speaker C: Counterfeit plates. [00:18:21] Speaker I: Where are they? [00:18:22] Speaker C: I don't know. [00:18:24] Speaker I: All right, Charlie, go ahead. Go ahead and make him talk. [00:18:35] Speaker G: That's no use, Eddie. He won't spill. [00:18:37] Speaker I: Get rid of him then. [00:18:38] Speaker G: No. Either here or Barlow knows where Winslow's plates are. [00:18:41] Speaker C: Barlow? Barlow doesn't know. [00:18:43] Speaker G: Neither do I. I think he's telling the truth. [00:18:45] Speaker F: Eddie, go through his pockets. [00:18:46] Speaker G: Okay. Identification cards named Dan Holiday. [00:18:53] Speaker F: Here. [00:18:53] Speaker I: You're reading. Some other time. What else is it? [00:18:56] Speaker G: Look, Eddie, look. [00:18:59] Speaker I: 517 Slack St. S. Thomas, 945. [00:19:03] Speaker G: That's the pawn shop. Barlow's place? [00:19:05] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:19:05] Speaker I: What's the rest of it mean? [00:19:07] Speaker G: I don't know. [00:19:08] Speaker I: You. What's this mean? [00:19:10] Speaker C: And if I tell you I don't know. I'll get battered around like a cue ball again. [00:19:14] Speaker I: Why, you. [00:19:15] Speaker G: Cut it out, Eddie. [00:19:16] Speaker I: Well, he knows. [00:19:17] Speaker G: Look, he went to Barlow's place this afternoon. If he knew where the plates were, he wouldn't be here, would he? So they've got to be at Barlow's shop. [00:19:25] Speaker I: Yeah, maybe you're right. Okay, tie him up. Both of them. And, Mr. Holliday, if we come back without the plates, you walk out without your head. [00:19:42] Speaker C: They did a good job of tying Barlow and me to the chairs. Then when they were gone, I talked with Barlow. Barlow. Barlow, are you all right? [00:19:54] Speaker H: Yeah, I think so. [00:19:57] Speaker C: What happened? Who were those men? [00:20:00] Speaker H: You know? Albert Winslow. Years ago, he engraved counterfeit plates. [00:20:05] Speaker C: What happened in your shop? [00:20:06] Speaker H: I was in my shop early this afternoon. I hadn't seen Albert since he was released. Then he came into my shop first. I didn't recognize him. And he spoke to me. [00:20:18] Speaker E: You remember me, don't you, Barlow? [00:20:20] Speaker H: I. I seem to. [00:20:23] Speaker E: Take a good look. [00:20:25] Speaker F: Al. [00:20:26] Speaker H: Al Winslow. [00:20:28] Speaker E: How are you? [00:20:28] Speaker H: Fine, fine. [00:20:29] Speaker F: But you paroled. [00:20:31] Speaker H: Oh, I see. [00:20:32] Speaker E: It's all right, Paolo. I'm going straight. [00:20:35] Speaker H: Well, of course, of course. Here is. Sit down. Back in the shop. [00:20:38] Speaker E: Wait a minute. I want to take a look around. [00:20:43] Speaker H: What are you looking for, Al? [00:20:45] Speaker E: Things didn't change much around here, did they? [00:20:48] Speaker H: What do you mean? Nothing. [00:20:51] Speaker E: Look Barlow, I want to go straight. So there's something I gotta tell you. I. [00:20:56] Speaker H: What's the matter? Oh, customers. I'll be back in a minute. [00:21:00] Speaker E: No, not customers. [00:21:01] Speaker H: Bow tie. [00:21:02] Speaker I: Hello, Al. Eddie, this is Charlie. You remember Charlie? [00:21:07] Speaker E: Sure. [00:21:09] Speaker I: Sit down, Barlow. Take it easy. [00:21:10] Speaker H: Hey, what is this? [00:21:11] Speaker E: Sit down, Barlow. Do what he says. [00:21:13] Speaker I: That's right. Okay, Al. Where are they? [00:21:17] Speaker E: I told you on the phone, you can't have them. I'm going straight. I'm going to turn them over to the government. [00:21:21] Speaker I: Sure. Beautiful plates. Like ours? Not much, you, Honor. Where are they? [00:21:26] Speaker E: No, I won't tell you. [00:21:28] Speaker I: Don't be a SAP. We'll take them and get out. [00:21:29] Speaker E: And I'll be picked up again. The feds and all my work. I'll have a great chance. I'm on parole. Please, let me alone. Just. Just let me alone. [00:21:37] Speaker I: Sure, sure. When we got the plates. They in here? No. Barlow, what do you say? [00:21:44] Speaker E: You don't know anything. [00:21:45] Speaker I: Come on, Al. Where are they? [00:21:47] Speaker E: Look, I gotta report to my parole officer this afternoon. If I don't, they'll come after me. [00:21:51] Speaker I: And you cut it out. [00:21:53] Speaker E: I. [00:21:54] Speaker I: Hey, Charlie, stop him. [00:21:58] Speaker E: Al. [00:22:00] Speaker C: Al. [00:22:01] Speaker I: You idiots. You mutton head. You killed him. [00:22:03] Speaker H: I'll call the police. [00:22:04] Speaker I: Get Winslow behind the counter. [00:22:05] Speaker C: Now. [00:22:05] Speaker I: Come on, Eddie. [00:22:06] Speaker G: There's somebody coming in. [00:22:07] Speaker I: Barlow, get out of sight. Charlie, get Winslow behind the counter. Now. Duck back of that screen. Come on. [00:22:22] Speaker C: Hello? Hello? Anybody here? [00:22:31] Speaker H: And that was you, Mr. Hollandy. Eddie hit you and you saw Winslow's body? [00:22:35] Speaker C: Uh huh. That's where I came in. But later, when I went back with Lieutenant Kling. What about that? [00:22:41] Speaker H: Well, I had to do what I did. They were upstairs. My wife was there. They threatened to. [00:22:48] Speaker C: I see. But Winslow reported to his parole officer that afternoon. After he was dead. [00:22:53] Speaker H: It was a telephone call they made from my shop. Charlie pretended to be Winslow. He told the officer he'd report in person in an hour. Then he hid Winslow's body in the basement. It's there now. [00:23:05] Speaker C: Oh, nice. Clever people. Now, what about those plates? Do you know where they are? [00:23:10] Speaker H: No, but Winslow frequently came to see me. He was offered in the shop alone and. [00:23:16] Speaker C: Barlow, I've got it. I know where those plates are. [00:23:19] Speaker H: Where? [00:23:20] Speaker C: Come on, let's get out of here first. [00:23:22] Speaker H: But how? [00:23:22] Speaker C: Look, there's a drinking glass on that table. I'll square my chair over there and knock the glass on the floor to break it. [00:23:28] Speaker H: But I. [00:23:28] Speaker C: Hold it. Here I go. Okay, Barlo, scrape over. Overturn your chair and get a piece of glass. Cut these ropes on my hand. I've got a date with a boy named Eddie. And he who slaps last slaps. [00:23:56] Speaker F: Better wait outside the shop, Holiday. [00:23:57] Speaker C: Oh, no, Kling. I'm too fond of Eddie. A lump on my head and a well across my face. Please don't shoot him. [00:24:04] Speaker F: Take it easy, Kelly. M. Take the back. Go ahead. You ready, Dan? [00:24:12] Speaker C: Yeah, let's go. Cops. The back door. [00:24:16] Speaker I: Ready? [00:24:16] Speaker C: Come on. Rather go. [00:24:19] Speaker I: Why, you. [00:24:20] Speaker C: You. Hello, Eddie. [00:24:24] Speaker F: Dan, you need any help? [00:24:25] Speaker C: No, just pick him up and stare him in my direction. [00:24:28] Speaker F: That's enough, boys. All cleaned up. [00:24:32] Speaker C: Eddie disappointed me. [00:24:33] Speaker F: Yeah, me too. He didn't hit you once. All right, out you go. Kelly, take pretty boy here and slap some jewelry on him. And what are you looking at, Holliday? [00:24:45] Speaker C: Me? Why, I'm looking at Mr. S. Thomas. [00:24:48] Speaker F: Huh? I thought his name was Eddie. [00:24:51] Speaker C: I'm not looking at him, Kling. I told you I was looking at Mr. S. Thomas and 945. [00:25:23] Speaker D: Well, go on, Mr. Holliday. What then? Who was Mr. S. Thomas and what did 9:45 mean? [00:25:29] Speaker C: Mr. S. Thomas, Susie, was a clock. One of the famous old Seth Thomas clocks. He was the only one in the shop whose hand stood at 9:45. [00:25:38] Speaker D: Yeah. And? [00:25:40] Speaker C: Well, Winswood put his counterfeit plates on the pendulum arm and that's where they were when we got them. [00:25:45] Speaker D: You mean they looked like a pendulum weight? [00:25:47] Speaker C: Exactly. It was very clever. [00:25:51] Speaker D: But, gee, what if somebody had bought the clock? [00:25:53] Speaker C: Well, that was a chance he took. But no one did and that's that. [00:25:59] Speaker D: There's one more thing that puzzles me. [00:26:01] Speaker C: One? [00:26:02] Speaker D: Yeah. Suppose Eddie and Charlie got the plates and made counterfeit money from them. So would they have to declare it for income tax? [00:26:10] Speaker C: Income? Oh, Good night, Susie.
