You know why I can't go to the police and why I must have help. Mrs. Sheila Corbett, 356 Waring Avenue. It didn't sound like much, this letter, but I did find out who her father was. I found him dead, then learned he was alive. Sure, it sounds impossible, but that was it. [00:01:27] Speaker A: And now back to the dead man walks another Box 13 adventure with Alan Ladd as Dan Holliday. [00:01:38] Speaker D: I wonder why she can't go to the police, Susie. [00:01:41] Speaker C: If I knew that, I wouldn't have to go to see Mrs. Corbyn. [00:01:44] Speaker D: Gee, Mr. Holliday, it sure sounds like a wild goose chase. He'll probably turn out to be a dub. Oh, is that the word I wanted, Susie. [00:01:53] Speaker C: Only you can give the answer to that question. [00:01:55] Speaker D: Well, once in a while I get a word right. Well, don't I? Thomas, the man who called Mrs. Corbett's father, on the phone? You know, a guy can ask himself a lot of questions and get no answers. So I drove to 517 Slack Street. It was a pawn shop with everything from gold toothpicks to elephant heads. And clocks, lots of clocks that ticked off little punctuation marks into the silence. Hello? Hello? Anybody here? But later, when I went back with Lieutenant Kling. What about that? [00:22:41] Speaker H: Well, I had to do what I did. They were upstairs. My wife was there. They threatened to. [00:22:48] Speaker C: I see. But Winslow reported to his parole officer that afternoon. After he was dead. [00:22:53] Speaker H: It was a telephone call they made from my shop. Charlie pretended to be Winslow. He told the officer he'd report in person in an hour. Then he hid Winslow's body in the basement. It's there now. [00:23:05] Speaker C: Oh, nice. Clever people. Now, what about those plates? Do you know where they are? [00:23:10] Speaker H: No, but Winslow frequently came to see me. He was offered in the shop alone and. [00:23:16] Speaker C: Barlow, I've got it. I know where those plates are. [00:23:19] Speaker H: Where? [00:23:20] Speaker C: Come on, let's get out of here first. [00:23:22] Speaker H: But how? [00:23:22] Speaker C: Look, there's a drinking glass on that table. I'll square my chair over there and knock the glass on the floor to break it. [00:23:28] Speaker H: But I. [00:23:28] Speaker C: Hold it. Here I go. Okay, Barlo, scrape over. Overturn your chair and get a piece of glass. Cut these ropes on my hand. I've got a date with a boy named Eddie. And he who slaps last slaps. [00:23:56] Speaker F: Better wait outside the shop, Holiday. [00:23:57] Speaker C: Oh, no, Kling. I'm too fond of Eddie. A lump on my head and a well across my face. [00:24:45] Speaker C: Me? Why, I'm looking at Mr. S. Thomas. [00:24:48] Speaker F: Huh? I thought his name was Eddie. [00:24:51] Speaker C: I'm not looking at him, Kling. I told you I was looking at Mr. S. Thomas and 945. [00:25:23] Speaker D: Well, go on, Mr. Holliday. What then? Who was Mr. S. Thomas and what did 9:45 mean? [00:25:29] Speaker C: Mr. S. Thomas, Susie, was a clock. One of the famous old Seth Thomas clocks. He was the only one in the shop whose hand stood at 9:45. [00:25:38] Speaker D: Yeah. And? [00:25:40] Speaker C: Well, Winswood put his counterfeit plates on the pendulum arm and that's where they were when we got them. [00:25:45] Speaker D: You mean they looked like a pendulum weight? [00:25:47] Speaker C: Exactly. It was very clever. [00:25:51] Speaker D: But, gee, what if somebody had bought the clock? [00:25:53] Speaker C: Well, that was a chance he took. But no one did and that's that. [00:25:59] Speaker D: There's one more thing that puzzles me. [00:26:01] Speaker C: One? [00:26:02] Speaker D: Yeah. Suppose Eddie and Charlie got the plates and made counterfeit money from them. So would they have to declare it for income tax? [00:26:10] Speaker C: Income? Oh, Good night, Susie.
